The first three Songwriter Circles were sellouts. Cal Scott, Richard Moore and their guest artists were a delightful surprise not only to their audience, but to each other as well. So we’re going to build on that success, this time with special guest Kathryn Claire, Monday, February 6 at 7:00pm.

Classically trained on the violin, Kathryn Claire added the guitar to her instrumental arsenal and employs both as a foundation for her compelling voice and intriguing songs. She’s been busy performing around the Northwest, and the Far East (Japan) with multi-instrumentalist Hanz Araki, but we shoehorned this show into her schedule to share her talents with the Songwriter Circle audience.

The first two Songwriter Circles were sellouts. Cal Scott, Richard Moore and their guest artists were a delightful surprise not only to their audience, but to each other as well. So we’re going to build on that success, this time on the west side at O’Connor’s in Multnomah Village, with special guest Ashleigh Flynn, Monday, December 5 at 7:00pm.

Ashleigh Flynn hails from Kentucky where she grew up foot stomping along the Ohio River as the steamboats and barges made their way to the muddy Mississippi. A songwriter of exceptional emotional depth and intelligence, Flynn is also an electrifying performer.

According to one of her songwriting heroes, Nanci Griffith, "Ashleigh represents the next generation of true songwriters. Her songs are wonderful and her voice is like an angel. She rules!" Ashleigh makes her home here in Portland, but tours all over the country and elsewhere, and has a stack of songwriting awards from festivals coast-to-coast. All I know is that her music just makes me smile.

The usual suspects bookending Ashleigh will be Cal Scott, jack-of-many-genres who writes and performs with The Trail Band and Kevin Burke, and the word-witty and tune-wise Richard Moore, likely to share a few more scenes from “Rain,” his musical-in-the-works about Portland. Cal and Richard will also debut a song they promised to write based on suggestions from the audience at the last show.

August’s Songwriter Circle was a smash hit with the sellout crowd at the Alberta Street Pub. Cal Scott, Richard Moore and special guest Chris Kokesh got a standing ovation and encore, a rare occurrence at this kind of show. So we’re going to build on that success, this time on the west side at O’Connor’s in Multnomah Village, with special guest Beth Wood,Monday, October 3 at 7:00pm.

Beth stood out among the many singer-songwriters at last year’sSisters Folk Festival as a riveting presence on stage, whether solo or collaborating with her musical peers. She’s won a string of festival songwriting competitions, including the prestigious Kerrville, Texas contest in 2005. Here are a couple of quotes from around the country:

Beth, originally from Lubbock, Texas, but settled into Eugene, doesn’t spend much time in Oregon. This is gonna be fun, and maybe monthly. Old friends and brilliant singer-songwriters Cal Scott and Richard Moore host the pilot episode of what may become a regular singer-songwriter circle, bringing together some some of the best local and touring acoustic artists for an informal monthly song swap.

Cal and Richard have invited Chris Kokesh to help launch the series. Chris is best known as the sweet-voiced fiddler with Misty River, and more recently with Brokentop, and as first-call harmony singer and fiddle player for just about everybody who tours Portland and has a clue. She has also won a pile of songwriting awards from festivals across the country.

Cal Scott is the multi-instrumental, multi-genre composer-guitarist-mandolinist- trumpeter-keyboard player who makes his living composing and producing scores for documentary films, tours the state with The Trail Band and the world with Irish fiddler Kevin Burke.
